Two Most Important Commandments (New Testament)

  1. Jesus said; “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.”

  2. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
    Matthew 22:36-40
How do we show our Love for the Father, our Creator? We show our love by being OBEDIENT to his laws i.e. the Ten Commandments, by nurturing our relationship with him, by putting him first in our life, by relying on the Holy Spirit in us to try to live as Jesus did and by reading his word daily.

The Ten Commandments (Old Testament)

  1. ‘Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” This means putting him first in everything we do, worshipping him, praising him, thanking him.,,,having a relationship with him.

  2. “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.” This means do not worship any false idols….such as the creation vs the creator, celebrities, an all consuming distractions.

  3. “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.” Do not curse our Father.

  4. “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it Holy.” Consecrate, set apart, sanctify. The Hebrew word Sabbath means day of rest. Jesus said; “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.” John 5:1-18

  5. “Honor thy Father and thy Mother.”

  6. “Thou shalt not kill.” Jesus said; “you shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will liable to council; and whoever say, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.” Matthew 5:21.

  7. “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” Jesus said; ‘You shall not commit adultery;’ but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

  8. “Thou shalt not steal.”

  9. “Thou shalt not bear false witness.”

  10. “Thou shalt not covet.”

The bad news is that we have all broken one or more of these laws. It is impossible to not have broken any of the ten commandments. However, the good news is by forgiving those who sin against us; Jesus will forgive our sins if we confess them, accept him as our Lord and Savior.
